Criminal defense lawyer PPC gets calls first. Ads can run once the account, call tracking and any Local Services verification are done, while SEO charge pages take months to rank. But a call only counts if a person answers it. Start paid for speed, build charge pages for later, and fix after-hours answering first.
You’re paying for clicks, and 39% of law firm phone inquiries still go to voicemail (Clio, 2019). A defendant’s family member searching at 11:40 on a Saturday night won’t leave a message. They’ll call the next firm. This article shows which channel gets you the first call, what SEO adds later, and the intake fix that makes both pay, then walks through how WKND runs it.
Key takeaways
- PPC is faster, but not instant. Google gives a Local Services advertiser 14 days to finish verification steps after an accelerated start.
- SEO is slower and has no per-click charge. WKND’s own page puts rankings at eight to twelve weeks and case-inquiry volume at four to six months.
- Plan for nights and weekends. In NHTSA’s 2024 crash data, impaired drivers in fatal crashes were three times as common at night as in daytime (31% versus 10%).
- Call-only ads are being retired. Google blocked new ones in January 2026 and stops serving all of them in February 2027. Many guides still recommend them.
- A charge page plus a rebuilt intake desk moves the numbers. One Austin criminal defense firm reported 128% more leads, an 87% conversion-rate improvement and 76% organic traffic growth.
- Judge both channels by answered calls and retained clients, not clicks or impressions.
Criminal defense PPC vs SEO at a glance
| Search ads (PPC) | Local Services Ads | SEO (charge pages and map pack) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to first call | After account setup, tracking and ad review | After Google’s license and identity checks, which can run in two stages | Months (WKND: 8 to 12 weeks for rankings, 4 to 6 months for inquiries) |
| What you pay for | Each click | Each lead: “You only pay when potential customers get in touch” (Google) | Work on pages and links, not clicks |
| Night and weekend fit | Bid by day and time, and show a tap-to-call number | Callers can call, message or book from the ad | A page ranks around the clock and pays off when the phone is answered |
| What stops it | You stop paying | You stop paying | Nothing, but rankings can slip |
| Main risk | Paying for clicks that never become calls | Verification time, and a per-lead charge for every contact | Waiting months in a competitive market |
| Judge it by | Cost per answered call, then per retained client | Cost per qualified lead, then per retained client | Calls by charge page and by hour |

Why is the first call a timing problem?
The person typing a search after an arrest is rarely at a desk at 10 a.m. NHTSA’s 2024 report found alcohol impairment among drivers in fatal crashes was three times higher at night than during the day, 31% versus 10%. On weekends it was 28%, against 15% on weekdays. That’s where DUI-related demand lands: at night and on weekends.
WKND’s criminal defense page describes the reader as often a family member searching on a phone after hours. That reader wants a number to call now, not a ranking strategy.
Here’s the number that settles most PPC vs SEO debates: the share of calls that reach a person. Clio’s 2019 Legal Trends Report, across law firms, found 56% of phone inquiries were answered by a person and 39% went to voicemail. More than half of firms did not return voicemails within 72 hours.
Read that again. A channel can work and the phone can still lose the case. Every dollar you put into ads or SEO is multiplied by the share of calls that get answered.
How fast does criminal defense PPC get calls?
Faster than SEO, with three gates in the way.
Gate one: the account. Conversion tracking has to count calls before the first click is worth anything. Google lets you set a minimum call length for a call to count as a conversion, and it can also use AI to qualify calls from recordings. A call under your threshold is reported as a call, not a conversion.
Gate two: the format. Standalone call-only ads are going away. Google’s Ads API blog says creating or duplicating call-only ads was blocked from January 2026, existing ones keep serving until February 2027, and the replacement is a responsive search ad with a call asset. A guide that tells you to build call-only campaigns is describing a format you can no longer start.
Gate three: Local Services verification. Local Services Ads have categories for criminal lawyers and for DUI lawyers. Google runs state bar license checks on each lawyer in the firm and verifies the business owner. In the US, a business can get accelerated verification and then has 14 days to complete the remaining steps.
Once those clear, calls start. LocaliQ’s 2026 average for attorneys and legal services gives you the reference point: $9.87 per click and $131.63 per lead.
That’s what WKND’s paid search program handles from day one: a campaign for each practice area, call tracking set up before the first click, and Local Services Ads next to Search. You’ll find the full list in “How WKND runs this play” below.
When does SEO start sending calls?
Later, and it builds. WKND’s legal SEO program gives its own timing: technical and on-page work usually moves rankings in eight to twelve weeks, and case-inquiry volume follows in four to six months. Competitive markets take longer.
The unit of work is the charge page: one page for each charge a firm defends, so the page matches what the searcher typed.
Austin, Texas, single-office criminal defense firm. The firm built a separate page for each charge and rebuilt its intake and speed to lead. The result: 128% more leads, an 87% conversion-rate improvement and 76% organic traffic growth.
Look at what that firm changed. It changed intake as well as pages, so the pages and the phone fix worked together. More traffic with the same slow desk gives you the same result. Traffic with a fast desk gives you 128% more leads.
This is the play WKND runs for criminal defense firms: “a separate page for each charge a firm defends,” with intake treated as part of conversion. Each page gets after-hours answering or live coverage, a call button visible before scrolling, a three-field form (name, phone, charge) and call tracking tied to that page. See charge-page SEO for defense firms.
Map-pack visibility is a second SEO track, with its own work and its own report. It serves “near me” searches and is separate from ranking charge pages.
Where do Local Services Ads fit?
Between the two. You pay per lead rather than per click, and the ad shows a call button, a message option and a booking option. The trade is a verification process and a lead price you don’t set. Google’s page says “You only pay when potential customers get in touch.”
For a new firm with no rankings and no reviews yet, LSAs plus a tight search campaign are the fastest first test. For a firm with strong organic position, they’re a second source of calls to compare against SEO on cost per retained client.
After hours: how do you stop paying for voicemail?
Neither channel creates a client if the call goes to voicemail at 11:40 on a Saturday night. Before you set a budget, run this check:
- Call your intake line at 11 p.m. on a weekend. Who answers, and how long does it take?
- Count how many rings before it reaches voicemail, and whether a text goes out after a missed call.
- Look at your last 30 missed calls. How many were called back inside an hour?
Google lets you adjust bids for specific days and times without changing your average daily budget. Use that to match spend to hours when someone will pick up. If nobody covers nights, show ads when the phone is covered and fund an answering option before you raise overnight bids.
Paid and organic share the same intake. The pieces that fix it sit next to the pages themselves: after-hours answering or live coverage, a call button visible before scrolling, a three-field form and call tracking tied to each page. WKND builds that into the program, not as an add-on.
How do you choose: three firm situations
| Your situation | Start with | Why | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| New firm, few rankings, no reviews | Search ads and Local Services Ads | Calls start after setup, not after rankings | Build two or three charge pages in parallel |
| Established firm, strong rankings, calls slowing | SEO on more charges, plus paid to fill gaps | Pages already convert; paid covers charges that don’t rank yet | Compare paid and organic by cost per retained client |
| Calls are coming but the phone is not covered | Intake first, then either channel | More traffic into voicemail adds cost, not clients | Test the 11 p.m. call, then set ad schedules |
Many firms run both. Paid covers the months before pages rank. Search term data from paid shows which charges and phrases produce calls, which tells you which pages to build first.
What does a retained client cost?
The number that decides PPC is cost per retained client, and two inputs give it to you.
Cost per retained client = cost per lead ÷ share of leads that retain.
The table uses the $131.63 LocaliQ average for attorneys and legal services as the cost per lead. The retention rates are inputs: swap in your own.
| Share of leads that retain | Cost per retained client at $131.63 per lead |
|---|---|
| 1 in 5 (20%) | $658.15 |
| 1 in 10 (10%) | $1,316.30 |
| 1 in 20 (5%) | $2,632.60 |
The spread is the point. The same lead price gives a fourfold difference in cost per client depending on what happens after the call. Fix the retention rate and every channel gets cheaper at once. After thirty days of tracked calls, replace the inputs with your own numbers.
What should you measure from the first week?
Click and impression reports look healthy early. Ask for these instead:
- Calls by hour of day, answered and missed
- Calls above your minimum call length
- Calls and forms by charge page
- Consultations held and clients retained
- Cost per retained client by channel
If a report can’t show calls by hour, you can’t tell whether the late-night budget is buying clients or voicemail. WKND’s reporting shows it.
How does WKND run this play?
WKND manages Google Ads and Bing campaigns for law firms across the United States and judges every campaign by what a signed case costs. For criminal defense, that means:
- A campaign for each practice area. Criminal defense, personal injury, divorce and estate planning searchers want different things, so each gets its own keywords and budget.
- Search terms reviewed by hand. We do a manual review of search terms to identify phrases to exclude (negative keywords) as well as new keyword targets.
- Local Services Ads next to Search. Where your firm qualifies, both run, and each is judged on its own numbers.
- A landing page per case type. Each ad sends its click to a page for that legal issue.
- Calls and forms tracked to intake. Call and form tracking feed your intake system or CRM, so each lead can be followed to a signed retainer.
- Bot and competitor clicks blocked. With ClickCease, clicks from bots, competitors, click farms, and other non-converting traffic gets added to an exclusion list, often saving 10% or more on potential wasted clicks.
A dedicated Google Ads strategist runs your account. Google Ads accounts are always set up in your account, with management access granted to our team. That means the Google Ads account is yours.
On the organic side, WKND builds the charge pages and the intake fix that the Austin firm ran. Paid gets you calls in weeks. Charge pages keep them coming after the budget stops.

What does it look like when this works?
Stack it up. Paid search starts the calls in weeks. Charge pages and a rebuilt intake desk produced 128% more leads at the Austin firm. Call tracking tells you which hour and which page paid for each retained client. Now the scoreboard WKND has built:
- Todd Miner Law, personal injury, Orlando (SEO). 8,166 ranking keywords; 7,500+ monthly organic visitors; 489 referring domains; #3 map pack; +288.9% keywords in six months, February 2025 to August 2025. Read the Todd Miner Law case.
- A San Francisco law firm (ChatGPT Ads). “Google Search leads cost this San Francisco firm $248 each.” WKND’s page reports that “$11,982 in ChatGPT Ads spend produced 114 leads at $105.11 each,” 58% below Google Search, from June 15 to July 31, 2026. See ChatGPT Ads for law firms.
- WKND-managed Google Ads accounts. 5.1x average ROAS, 43% lower CPC and $8M+ in revenue driven over the last 12 months.
I’ve built, scaled and sold three companies. WKND runs this play so you count answered calls and retained clients, not clicks.

FAQ
Is PPC or SEO better for a criminal defense firm?
PPC produces calls sooner, and SEO has no per-click charge once pages rank. Most firms run both and compare them by cost per retained client. Start with paid if you need calls now, and build charge pages in parallel.
Does PPC work for DUI and other late-night searches?
Yes, when the phone is answered while the ads run. Use day-and-time bid adjustments to match coverage, and track calls by hour so you can see what the late-night spend buys.
What are Local Services Ads for criminal defense?
They are Google ads with a call button that charge per lead. Google lists criminal and DUI lawyer categories. You complete license and identity verification first.
How long does SEO take for a criminal defense firm?
WKND’s page says rankings usually move in eight to twelve weeks and inquiry volume follows in four to six months, longer in competitive markets.
Can I turn off ads once my pages rank?
Test it. Cut one campaign, watch calls by charge for a few weeks, and keep paid where organic doesn’t cover the charge or the hour.
Who owns the Google Ads account?
You do. The account is set up in your name and WKND gets management access under its law firm paid search management.
