AppLovin is a performance advertising technology company. Its core advertiser platform, AppLovin Ads, uses the Axon AI recommendation system to acquire customers through mobile app inventory. App publishers use MAX to monetize ad inventory, while Adjust provides measurement and attribution and Wurl serves connected TV. AppLovin sold its former mobile gaming studio business in 2025.

A large amount of AppLovin content online is already outdated. Some pages still describe AppLovin primarily as a mobile game company. Others call its advertiser platform AppDiscovery or Axon Ads Manager. Those descriptions reflect different stages of the company, but they do not cleanly describe AppLovin as it operates in September 2026.

The simplest model separates the company, the advertising platform, and the technology underneath it. AppLovin is the company. AppLovin Ads is the current advertiser-facing platform. Axon is the AI recommendation system that powers the advertising platform.

AppLovin is not an app company anymore. It is an advertising engine with an app history.

This guide explains what AppLovin does now, what changed, and which products matter to advertisers, app developers, and publishers.

AppLovin at a Glance

Question Current answer
What kind of company is AppLovin? An advertising technology company focused on performance advertising, app monetization, measurement, and related advertising infrastructure
When was AppLovin founded? 2012
Who founded AppLovin? Adam Foroughi, John Krystynak, and Andrew Karam
Who is AppLovin’s CEO? Adam Foroughi, co-founder and CEO
Where is AppLovin based? Palo Alto, California
Is AppLovin public? Yes. AppLovin’s Class A common stock trades on Nasdaq under APP
What is its core advertiser product called now? AppLovin Ads
What is Axon? AppLovin’s AI advertising recommendation system
What does AppLovin use for publisher monetization? MAX
Does AppLovin still operate its former mobile game studios? No. AppLovin completed the sale of that business in June 2025

AppLovin’s own investor materials describe the company as building technology that helps businesses advertise profitably, attract customers, increase revenue, and measure advertising performance. Its August 2026 quarterly filing goes further: AppLovin now reports a single operating segment built around AppLovin Ads, MAX, Adjust, and Wurl.

That current filing is a useful correction to older explainers because it tells us how the company itself presently organizes the business.

What Does AppLovin Actually Do in 2026?

AppLovin operates on both sides of the digital advertising market.

On one side are advertisers that want customers, purchases, subscribers, leads, or high-value app users. On the other side are publishers, especially mobile app and game developers, that have advertising inventory they want to monetize.

AppLovin supplies technology that helps connect those two sides, optimize the transaction, and measure what happened.

For advertisers: AppLovin helps acquire customers and users

AppLovin Ads is the current performance advertising platform. In June 2026, AppLovin opened the self-serve platform to all advertisers and formally standardized the advertiser-facing name as AppLovin Ads. When the self-serve product launched on a referral basis in October 2025, AppLovin had called the platform Axon. The company now reserves the Axon name for its AI recommendation system.

AppLovin says advertisers can currently optimize campaigns toward several types of measurable outcomes, including return on ad spend, cost per purchaser, and leads. Consumer brands can use the platform for physical ecommerce products, digital products, subscriptions, and services, while gaming advertisers can use it to acquire app users.

The inventory is unusual compared with social platforms. AppLovin’s current advertiser materials focus heavily on mobile games. Ads can appear full-screen during natural breaks in gameplay or in rewarded placements that users choose to watch in exchange for an in-game benefit.

For a consumer brand, that means AppLovin is not simply another social feed. It is a performance channel built around a different attention environment and a different supply base.

Brands that want help deciding whether that channel fits their economics, setting up measurement, developing the right creative, and managing campaigns can review WKND’s AppLovin agency and management services. The purpose of this guide, however, is to explain the ecosystem rather than sell the service.

For publishers: AppLovin helps monetize app inventory

For app publishers, MAX is the central monetization product.

MAX runs real-time auctions in which demand sources compete for a publisher’s available ad impressions. The objective is straightforward: increase competition for each impression and help the publisher maximize the value of its inventory. AppLovin’s current MAX materials also include reporting, ad-quality controls, A/B testing, mediation tools, and integrations with measurement partners.

This is why AppLovin can look like two different companies depending on who is searching. An ecommerce operator sees a customer-acquisition platform. A mobile game developer may see both an acquisition platform and a monetization stack.

The AppLovin Product Map

Here is the current practical map.

Product or system Primary user What it does How to think about it in 2026
AppLovin Ads Consumer-brand and app advertisers Buys performance advertising and optimizes toward customer or user-acquisition goals Current advertiser-facing platform name
Axon AI Powers AppLovin’s advertising system Evaluates advertising opportunities and recommends how to deploy advertiser spend toward stated goals The AI recommendation system, not the current platform brand
AppDiscovery Primarily app and game marketers User acquisition for mobile apps, with goal-based campaign optimization An app-UA product and dashboard label that remains present in current AppLovin materials, but is not the umbrella name for the 2026 advertiser platform
MAX App and game publishers Mediation and in-app bidding that auctions publisher inventory among demand sources AppLovin’s core publisher monetization solution
AppLovin Exchange (ALX) Publishers and demand partners Exchange infrastructure through which advertising demand can buy publisher inventory Part of the supply and auction ecosystem, visible in current publisher documentation
Adjust Marketers and app advertisers Measurement, attribution, analytics, and fraud-prevention capabilities A separate AppLovin-owned measurement and analytics product
Wurl Streaming and CTV companies Content distribution, CTV advertising, and monetization AppLovin’s connected-TV product area

First, AppDiscovery and AppLovin Ads are not useful synonyms. AppDiscovery remains visible in AppLovin’s current app user-acquisition materials and dashboard documentation. But AppLovin’s June 2026 10-Q names AppLovin Ads as the company’s demand-side advertising solution and one of the four solutions in its current operating segment.

Second, Axon is not the name of the self-serve platform anymore. AppLovin made that distinction explicit on June 22, 2026. If you want the complete naming history, see Is AXON AppLovin? AppLovin Ads vs. Axon AI Explained.

How AppLovin Works at a High Level

The detailed mechanics deserve their own guide, but the basic system can be understood in four steps.

1. An advertiser defines an outcome

The advertiser creates a campaign and gives AppLovin a measurable goal. Depending on the campaign and business, that may be a return-on-ad-spend target, a cost-per-purchaser target, a lead value, or an app-specific event.

2. AppLovin Ads uses Axon to evaluate opportunities

Axon is the recommendation system underneath the advertising platform. AppLovin describes it as the technology used to optimize how advertiser capital is deployed against campaign goals.

That does not mean advertisers should treat Axon as a black box that guarantees profitable growth. The system can optimize only against the goals, conversion signals, creative inputs, inventory, and measurement environment available to it.

3. Ads compete for inventory inside third-party apps

AppLovin connects advertiser demand with inventory owned by third-party publishers. The company’s June 2026 filing says revenue is primarily generated from advertisements placed in mobile applications owned by publishers.

MAX operates on the publisher side, where multiple demand sources can compete in real time for available impressions. AppLovin Exchange is part of that broader auction infrastructure.

4. Results feed the performance loop

Advertisers measure conversions and campaign economics. Publishers measure monetization. AppLovin uses the performance data available to its systems to continue optimizing decisions.

That is the high-level loop. For the operational version, including setup, tracking, campaign goals, creative, bidding, learning, attribution, and optimization, see How Does AppLovin Work for Advertisers?. For the more technical distinction between buying platforms, exchanges, mediation, and supply, see Is AppLovin a DSP?.

Where Do AppLovin Ads Appear?

For the current consumer-brand product, AppLovin emphasizes advertising inside mobile games.

Its advertiser documentation identifies two primary placement contexts:

  • Interstitial placements, which appear during natural breaks such as between game levels.
  • Rewarded placements, which users opt into in exchange for an in-game reward.

The current ad experience for web advertisers can combine full-screen video with interactive and catalog-driven components. AppLovin also publishes examples of game genres and titles in which ads may appear.

The strategic point is not simply that an ad runs “in an app.” The user context, available attention, creative sequence, and conversion path differ from a social feed or search ad. That can change how a brand should approach creative, attribution, and incrementality.

Our deeper guide, Where Do AppLovin Ads Appear?, is where inventory, placements, formats, and audience context should be evaluated in detail.

Who Uses AppLovin?

AppLovin’s user base now spans more than the mobile game developers with which the company was historically associated.

Consumer brands and web businesses

AppLovin publicly positions AppLovin Ads for ecommerce companies, subscription businesses, services, and other performance advertisers. Its 2026 materials also describe lead-generation use cases in categories such as insurance and home services.

Gaming and mobile app advertisers

App marketers have been a core AppLovin audience for years. AppDiscovery remains a user-acquisition product for apps, and AppLovin Ads also serves gaming advertisers seeking high-value users.

App and game publishers

Publishers use MAX and related AppLovin infrastructure to monetize inventory. A publisher may therefore work with AppLovin even if it is not buying acquisition campaigns itself.

Streaming and CTV businesses

Wurl extends AppLovin into connected television, with content distribution, advertising, and monetization tools for streaming companies.

The right question for a prospective advertiser is not simply “Do companies like mine use AppLovin?” It is whether AppLovin’s inventory, optimization model, creative environment, conversion volume, unit economics, and measurement requirements fit the business. That decision belongs in a separate readiness analysis. See Who Uses AppLovin? Best-Fit Brands, Industries, Use Cases, and Qualification Criteria.

How Does AppLovin Make Money?

AppLovin is now overwhelmingly an advertising business.

Its June 2026 10-Q says the company generates substantially all of its revenue from AppLovin Ads. Advertisers pay for access to advertising inventory, with the amount charged determined dynamically based on campaign goals and presented net of consideration paid or payable to publishers.

The same filing describes additional revenue models across the rest of the product set:

  • MAX revenue is based on a percentage of winning auction spend.
  • Adjust revenue is primarily generated through annual software subscriptions.
  • Wurl revenue is primarily usage-based and/or CPM-based.

That is enough to understand the current company. It is not enough to understand the full economics of the marketplace, publisher payments, advertiser pricing, or the difference between AppLovin’s revenue and an advertiser’s return. Those belong in How Does AppLovin Make Money?.

Why Older Explanations of AppLovin Can Be Wrong

AppLovin changed quickly enough that publication date now matters.

Older description: AppLovin is both an ad-tech company and a mobile game owner

That was historically true. It is no longer a good description of the current operating company.

AppLovin completed the sale of its mobile gaming business to Tripledot Studios on June 30, 2025. The transaction included ten game studios. AppLovin’s current SEC filings classify the former Apps Business as discontinued operations and describe the remaining company as a single advertising-solutions segment.

So if an explainer published today still says AppLovin directly operates its old portfolio of gaming studios as one of its two core businesses, it is using a stale model.

Older description: AppLovin’s main advertiser platform is AppDiscovery

AppDiscovery was the central user-acquisition name in older company filings and remains active in app-UA materials. But AppLovin’s current corporate filing now calls its core demand-side solution AppLovin Ads.

The distinction matters because AppLovin has expanded the advertising proposition beyond app-install marketing into consumer brands, ecommerce, subscriptions, services, lead generation, and other measurable performance use cases.

Older description: the self-serve platform is called Axon or Axon Ads Manager

That terminology reflects the rollout period.

AppLovin launched the self-serve platform on a referral basis in October 2025 and called it Axon. On June 22, 2026, the company renamed the advertiser-facing product AppLovin Ads and clarified that Axon remains the AI recommendation system.

Older SEC filings also use “Axon Ads Manager” because they predate that June 2026 product-name change. Current filings use AppLovin Ads.

Older product lists: SparkLabs, Array, and other legacy labels

Older AppLovin materials and third-party explainers may list products such as SparkLabs or Array as if they belong in the current core stack. Array, for example, appeared in older filings as an OEM and carrier initiative.

That does not justify describing those names as current core operating solutions in 2026. AppLovin’s June 2026 filing identifies AppLovin Ads, MAX, Adjust, and Wurl as the current operating solutions. When an older product name matters to a specific technical question, verify its current status separately rather than copying an old product map.

This freshness problem is one reason broad “what is AppLovin?” pages can be misleading even when individual facts once were accurate.

What Is AppLovin Used For?

A practical way to answer that question is by objective.

If you need to… The relevant AppLovin path is…
Acquire ecommerce customers, purchasers, subscribers, or leads AppLovin Ads
Acquire users for a mobile game or app AppLovin Ads and, for app-UA workflows, AppDiscovery-related tooling
Use AppLovin’s AI optimization system Axon powers the advertising decisioning underneath AppLovin Ads
Monetize ad inventory inside an app or game MAX, with exchange and demand integrations around it
Measure and attribute app marketing Adjust
Distribute or monetize connected-TV content Wurl
Understand whether AppLovin belongs in a broader media mix Compare the advertiser use case, inventory, economics, creative demands, and measurement requirements before allocating budget

The products interact, but each specialist workflow deserves its own deeper explanation.

Is AppLovin a DSP, an Ad Network, or an Ad Platform?

The cleanest answer is that AppLovin is a broader advertising technology company, and AppLovin Ads is its demand-side advertising solution. AppLovin’s own June 2026 SEC filing uses that demand-side description.

Calling the entire company “a DSP” is too narrow because AppLovin also operates publisher monetization technology through MAX, measurement through Adjust, and CTV technology through Wurl. Calling it only an ad network also misses the auction, mediation, measurement, and optimization layers.

If you need the technical classification rather than the company overview, use the dedicated Is AppLovin a DSP? guide.

Who Competes With AppLovin?

There is no single correct competitor list because AppLovin spans several functions.

A consumer advertiser may compare AppLovin with large acquisition platforms such as Meta, Google, or TikTok. An app marketer may compare it with mobile performance platforms. A publisher evaluating MAX may instead compare mediation and monetization products. Adjust has a different competitive set from Wurl.

That is why generic “AppLovin competitors” lists often mix companies that do not actually compete for the same buyer or budget. A useful comparison has to start with the use case. Our AppLovin competitors guide separates those categories rather than forcing them into one list. For the larger market story, see How AppLovin Challenged Google.

Is AppLovin Legit and Safe to Use?

AppLovin is an established public company that files financial reports with the SEC and operates advertiser, publisher, measurement, and CTV products globally. That answers the narrow question of whether AppLovin is a real operating company.

It does not answer every due-diligence question an advertiser or publisher should ask.

A serious evaluation should still examine platform policies, privacy obligations, data handling, traffic quality, ad review, measurement, attribution, incrementality, publisher controls, and the economics of the specific campaign. Company legitimacy and channel suitability are different questions.

Those issues deserve evidence and careful attribution rather than a one-word “safe” or “unsafe” conclusion. See Is AppLovin Legit and Safe? for the due-diligence framework.

What AppLovin Is Not

Several misconceptions become easier to avoid once the current structure is clear.

AppLovin is not primarily a mobile game studio anymore. It sold the former gaming business in 2025 and reports the continuing company as an advertising-solutions business.

Axon is not a separate company. It is AppLovin’s AI recommendation system.

Axon is not the current public name of the advertiser platform. That platform is now AppLovin Ads.

MAX is not the same product as AppLovin Ads. AppLovin Ads serves demand from advertisers; MAX helps publishers monetize inventory.

AppDiscovery is not the best umbrella term for everything AppLovin does. It remains relevant to app user acquisition, but AppLovin’s current core advertiser solution is AppLovin Ads.

AppLovin is not only for app-install campaigns. Its current product positioning includes web purchases, subscriptions, services, leads, and other measurable outcomes in addition to gaming and app growth.

That set of distinctions is the main reason a current AppLovin overview needs more precision than a simple list of products.

Frequently Asked Questions About AppLovin

What is AppLovin in simple terms?

AppLovin is an advertising technology company. It helps advertisers acquire customers or app users, helps mobile app publishers monetize advertising inventory, and owns related products for measurement and connected TV. Its current advertiser platform is AppLovin Ads, which is powered by the Axon AI recommendation system.

What does AppLovin do for ecommerce brands?

AppLovin Ads lets ecommerce and other web advertisers run performance campaigns against mobile-game inventory. Advertisers can optimize toward measurable outcomes such as ROAS or purchasers, connect web conversion tracking, upload creative, and use AppLovin’s automation to allocate spend. The important business question is whether the channel produces incremental, profitable customers when measured against the brand’s blended economics.

Is Axon the same thing as AppLovin Ads?

No. Since June 22, 2026, AppLovin Ads has been the name of the advertiser-facing platform. Axon is the AI recommendation system that powers the platform. The self-serve platform was called Axon during its referral-based rollout, which is why older articles and search queries still use Axon or Axon Ads Manager as the product name.

What is AppDiscovery?

AppDiscovery is AppLovin’s user-acquisition product and dashboard label for app marketers. Current AppLovin materials still use the AppDiscovery name for app growth and user acquisition. However, AppLovin’s June 2026 SEC filing names AppLovin Ads as the company’s core demand-side advertising solution, so AppDiscovery should not be used as the umbrella name for the entire current advertiser platform.

Is AppLovin still a mobile game company?

Not in the way many older articles describe it. AppLovin completed the sale of its mobile gaming business, including ten studios, to Tripledot Studios on June 30, 2025. Its current SEC filings classify that former Apps Business as discontinued operations and describe the continuing business as a single advertising-solutions segment.

What is AppLovin on Android?

AppLovin technology can appear inside Android apps in several ways. Publishers can integrate the AppLovin MAX SDK to monetize ads, while advertisers building mobile-app measurement flows may use AppLovin’s Axon SDK for event tracking. For an Android user, seeing AppLovin-related components generally reflects advertising or measurement infrastructure embedded in an app, not necessarily a standalone AppLovin consumer app.

Who founded AppLovin, and who runs it today?

AppLovin was founded in 2012 by Adam Foroughi, John Krystynak, and Andrew Karam. Adam Foroughi remains co-founder and CEO. AppLovin is headquartered at 1100 Page Mill Road in Palo Alto, California, according to its investor materials and current SEC filings.

How many employees does AppLovin have?

AppLovin reported 898 employees as of December 31, 2025, including 876 full-time employees and 22 part-time or intern employees across 15 countries. That is the latest audited year-end headcount located for this guide. Because headcount can change between filings, it should be cited with the date rather than presented as a permanent current number.

The Bottom Line: What Does AppLovin Do?

AppLovin is best understood as a performance advertising company with a connected set of technologies for customer acquisition, publisher monetization, measurement, and CTV.

For advertisers, AppLovin Ads is the main platform and Axon is the AI system powering its optimization. For publishers, MAX helps monetize app inventory. Adjust provides measurement and attribution, Wurl covers connected TV, AppLovin Exchange supports the auction ecosystem, and AppDiscovery remains relevant to app user acquisition even though it is no longer the best umbrella label for AppLovin’s current advertiser business.

The biggest source of confusion is not what AppLovin does. It is that the company changed faster than many descriptions of it. The 2025 game-studio divestiture and the June 2026 AppLovin Ads naming change make older product maps materially less useful.

For readers evaluating the platform commercially, the next question is not “What is AppLovin?” It is whether AppLovin can add profitable, incremental growth to the existing acquisition mix. That requires a deeper look at inventory, campaign mechanics, creative, measurement, and economics rather than a broader company definition.
