AppLovin Ads works by taking an advertiser’s conversion data, business goal, budget, landing page, and creative, then using Axon AI to evaluate mobile-app and game advertising opportunities against that goal. Web advertisers can optimize for ROAS, cost per purchase, or cost per lead. AppLovin automates much of the audience selection and bidding, while the advertiser still owns tracking quality, economics, creative inputs, attribution, and scale decisions.

That is the operational answer.

AppLovin is no longer a platform that requires an invitation or referral. Since June 22, 2026, any business can create an AppLovin Ads account and use the self-serve platform.

But “self-serve” should not be confused with “set it and forget it.”

Axon does not need your targeting opinions. It needs your conversion events, clean and fast.

Tommy Patterson, WKND

The system can automate media decisions. It cannot independently determine whether your contribution margin is healthy, whether your tracking is wrong, whether your landing page converts, whether your creative is persuasive, or whether reported conversions are truly incremental.

The best way to understand how AppLovin works is to separate the workflow into eight stages:

  1. qualify the business;
  2. create the account;
  3. connect tracking and conversion signals;
  4. choose the campaign objective and audience strategy;
  5. set the day target and budget;
  6. provide AppLovin-native creative;
  7. evaluate performance and attribution;
  8. scale only when the economics hold.

Watch: How AppLovin Ads Works for Ecommerce (video)

Tommy Patterson, Founder & CEO of WKND Agency, explains AppLovin Ads and Axon Ads Manager for ecommerce: creative, campaign setup, attribution, incrementality and case studies. Watch the full breakdown with chapters.

Step 1: Decide Whether AppLovin Is Worth Testing

Before touching the campaign settings, define the business outcome.

For a web advertiser, the useful questions are:

  • What can we afford to pay for a purchase or lead?
  • What ROAS produces acceptable contribution profit?
  • Are we optimizing for total purchases, new customers, or completely new visitors?
  • Does the website convert well on mobile?
  • Can purchase or lead events be measured correctly?
  • Can the team create and refresh video and interactive assets?
  • How will we determine whether AppLovin adds incremental revenue?

AppLovin currently supports physical ecommerce, subscriptions, digital products, services, lead generation, and app advertising.

That does not mean all of those businesses should launch immediately.

The prerequisites and readiness framework are covered in Who Uses AppLovin? Best-Fit Brands, Industries, Use Cases, and Qualification Criteria.

For this article, assume the business has a measurable performance goal and is ready to test.

Step 2: Create an AppLovin Ads Account

AppLovin Ads is now open self-service. Advertisers no longer need a referral code or an existing AppLovin relationship to create an account.

AppLovin says that before June 2026, businesses needed either a direct relationship or, during the self-serve beta, a referral.

That restriction ended on June 22, 2026.

The current process begins by creating an advertiser account and entering the business information required by AppLovin.

After account creation, the next critical step is not building the ad.

It is tracking.

Do not build campaigns before conversion data is ready

A performance model learns from the signals you send it.

If purchase events are missing, duplicated, delayed, or mapped incorrectly, the system is optimizing against bad information.

That can make a media problem look like an algorithm problem when the root cause is implementation.

Step 3: Install and Validate Tracking

For web advertisers, AppLovin currently requires the AppLovin Pixel so the platform can measure conversion activity and optimize campaigns. Shopify advertisers can use the AppLovin Shopify app. Non-Shopify websites can use Google Tag Manager.

AppLovin’s current web setup guidance says:

  • Shopify merchants should install the AppLovin app;
  • the Shopify app can configure the pixel, purchase tracking, and product catalog synchronization;
  • non-Shopify businesses can implement the pixel through Google Tag Manager;
  • advertisers should use the Pixel Helper and Events Manager to verify events before launch.

For Shopify headless configurations, AppLovin’s current support documentation gives more specific implementation instructions and cautions against duplicating checkout events through both GTM and the Shopify integration.

The important operating rule is simple:

Do not assume the pixel works because the tag exists. Verify the events AppLovin actually receives.

What should be checked before launch?

At minimum:

  • page-view events;
  • purchase or lead events;
  • purchase values;
  • currency;
  • landing-page parameters;
  • duplicate events;
  • UTM structure;
  • the correct event showing in AppLovin Events Manager.

For lead-generation advertisers, AppLovin also recommends using its Conversion API alongside the Pixel.

The current lead-gen Conversion API lets advertisers send generate_lead events and assign a value to those leads. AppLovin says higher-quality leads can receive higher values, while low-quality or duplicate submissions can be sent with a value of zero.

That is strategically important.

A lead platform should not optimize merely for the cheapest form submission if the business knows some leads are worthless.

App advertisers use a different tracking path

If the advertiser is promoting a mobile app rather than a website, AppLovin’s current app guide directs the advertiser to connect a mobile measurement partner such as Adjust or AppsFlyer and verify postbacks before launch.

AppLovin specifically warns that incorrect tracking can hurt campaign performance when the platform fails to receive conversion data.

This article focuses primarily on web advertisers, but the principle is the same:

the optimization system can only learn from the signals it receives.

Step 4: Create the Campaign and Set the Destination

AppLovin’s current web guidance says most advertisers start with one campaign.

The advertiser defines:

  • a recognizable campaign name;
  • landing-page URL;
  • tracking configuration;
  • optimization type;
  • audience strategy;
  • day target;
  • geography;
  • budget;
  • creative sets.

AppLovin can automatically append its own tracking parameters.

If the advertiser uses a supported third-party measurement partner, AppLovin can also append the partner’s UTMs across creative sets.

Current integrated partners listed by AppLovin include:

  • Northbeam;
  • Triple Whale;
  • Measured;
  • Prescient;
  • Hyros;
  • Fospha;
  • RedTrack;
  • Converge;
  • Daasity;
  • other measurement providers.

This matters because the campaign should not be designed around platform reporting alone.

The measurement plan belongs in the setup, not as an afterthought after spend has already accumulated.

Brands that want an operating partner to connect campaign architecture, creative, measurement, and economics can review WKND’s managed AppLovin advertising.

Step 5: Choose the Optimization Type

For current web campaigns, AppLovin offers three primary optimization types.

ROAS

ROAS campaigns optimize toward revenue relative to ad spend.

AppLovin positions ROAS as especially useful for:

  • multi-SKU brands;
  • businesses where transaction values vary;
  • advertisers that care about total revenue efficiency.

The advertiser enters the goal as a percentage.

A 2x target would therefore be entered as 200%.

Cost Per Purchase

CPP campaigns optimize toward a target cost per transaction.

AppLovin says this can fit:

  • single-SKU businesses;
  • subscriptions;
  • businesses with a defined CAC or purchase target.

Cost Per Lead

CPL campaigns optimize toward lead generation.

AppLovin currently makes this available for lead-generation and digital-services businesses.

For lead quality, the platform recommends Conversion API signals in addition to Pixel tracking.

The goal should come from business economics

The target should not be chosen because it sounds aggressive.

A better process is:

  1. calculate contribution margin or allowable CAC;
  2. account for fulfillment, discounts, refunds, creative, and variable costs;
  3. define the media threshold;
  4. set a target that gives the system enough room to learn;
  5. tighten the goal only after evidence supports it.

AppLovin’s current optimization guidance explicitly warns against setting ROAS or CPP targets too aggressively at launch because the model may restrict spend before it has enough data.

Step 6: Choose the Audience Strategy

For purchase-focused web campaigns, AppLovin currently offers three audience strategies.

Universal

Universal values all purchases or revenue, whether the buyer is new or returning.

Use it when the primary objective is:

  • total ROAS;
  • overall purchase volume;
  • overall CPP.

Prospecting

Prospecting focuses on new customers.

Use it when the business cares more about:

  • customer acquisition;
  • new-customer revenue;
  • acquiring new subscribers.

Discovery

Discovery goes further.

It focuses on users who have never visited the advertiser’s website.

AppLovin introduced Discovery campaigns in February 2026 for brands that want to reach people who have not previously interacted with the site.

Current support documentation says Prospecting and Discovery require the advertiser to provide sufficient historical purchase data, either through the Shopify integration or by uploading available purchase history.

The distinction is important:

  • Universal asks, “Can we generate profitable purchases?”
  • Prospecting asks, “Can we generate profitable new customers?”
  • Discovery asks, “Can we generate purchases from people who have never visited us?”

A business can run multiple audience strategies at the same time.

Step 7: Set the Day Target

The day target tells AppLovin which conversion window the model should optimize toward.

Current web documentation offers:

Day 0

Day 0 focuses on conversions within the first 24 hours.

AppLovin says this is the appropriate starting point for many brands because many platform-driven purchases happen on the same day as the ad engagement.

Day 7

Day 7 allows the model to optimize toward a longer purchase cycle.

AppLovin currently gives examples such as:

  • furniture;
  • mattresses;
  • higher-AOV health products;
  • other products with more consideration.

The day target is not simply a reporting preference.

It changes the optimization objective.

A higher-AOV brand that forces a same-day target may judge the channel before the natural consideration period has passed.

Step 8: Set the Budget

AppLovin currently says web advertisers should start with enough budget to generate a meaningful number of daily purchases relative to their normal CPA.

Its web setup guide gives a practical benchmark:

a budget capable of driving around 10 purchases per day on the advertiser’s existing social channels can be a reasonable starting point for giving the model sufficient signal.

This is guidance, not an official universal minimum.

The amount required depends on:

  • CPA;
  • conversion rate;
  • product price;
  • geography;
  • day target;
  • campaign goal;
  • creative;
  • customer demand.

AppLovin also currently says advertisers can technically create campaigns with far lower platform entry budgets.

The distinction is the same one discussed in Article #5:

minimum account access is not the same thing as enough budget to learn.

For app campaigns, AppLovin gives a separate recommendation of roughly 15 to 20 conversions per day for stable performance.

That app-specific guidance should not be copied into web campaigns as a universal rule.

How AppLovin Targeting Actually Works

AppLovin does not ask web advertisers to build the same detailed interest stacks familiar from older social-media buying.

Current campaign setup emphasizes:

  • campaign objective;
  • broad geography;
  • audience strategy;
  • conversion history;
  • creative;
  • performance target.

AppLovin recommends broad geographic targeting across markets the business can serve, with current documentation excluding Western Europe from the recommended available-region approach.

Axon AI then evaluates advertising opportunities against the objective.

The platform’s role is to decide where the budget has the strongest predicted opportunity.

The advertiser’s role is to provide trustworthy inputs and interpret the business outcome.

If the names AppLovin Ads, Axon AI, and AppDiscovery still feel blurred, read Is AXON AppLovin? AppLovin Ads vs. Axon AI Explained.

What Creative Does AppLovin Need?

AppLovin’s current consumer-brand ad experience is designed around full-screen vertical video followed by an Interactive Page and, where applicable, a Dynamic Catalog.

The current web ad specifications support:

  • 9:16 portrait video;
  • MP4, MOV, or M4V;
  • up to 60 seconds;
  • images or HTML for the Interactive Page;
  • Dynamic Catalog content;
  • brand assets.

AppLovin recommends including a meaningful mix of longer videos, often 30 seconds or more.

Its current optimization guidance says the top 5% of ads on the platform average 37 seconds.

That is an AppLovin platform observation, not a rule that 37 seconds is universally optimal.

Do not simply resize a Meta ad

AppLovin repeatedly warns advertisers that the environment is not a scrolling feed.

A consumer may have substantially more uninterrupted full-screen exposure than in many social placements.

The creative should therefore be built to use the environment:

  • strong opening value proposition;
  • narrative or demonstration;
  • subtitles;
  • social proof;
  • offer;
  • product education;
  • clear CTA;
  • Interactive Page that continues the message.

The actual placement environment is covered more deeply in Where Do AppLovin Ads Appear?.

Creative volume matters

AppLovin’s current creative guidance says advertisers should start with what they have and add new creative weekly.

It also warns against pausing assets too quickly.

The platform says a median converting user sees multiple distinct ads before purchasing, meaning one creative can play an upper-funnel role while another closes the transaction later.

That means creative should not be judged only by isolated last-click-looking metrics.

What Does AppLovin Automate?

AppLovin automates much of the media-decision layer.

At a high level, Axon AI evaluates available advertising opportunities relative to:

  • campaign goal;
  • conversion signals;
  • historical behavior;
  • creative response;
  • predicted value.

AppLovin then shifts spend and bidding toward opportunities it predicts will help reach the advertiser’s goal.

AppLovin also says its optimizer shifts spend toward creative combinations that are contributing to successful customer journeys.

What the system does not automate for you:

  • contribution-margin math;
  • product-market fit;
  • offer quality;
  • conversion-rate optimization;
  • fulfillment economics;
  • customer lifetime value assumptions;
  • incrementality strategy;
  • legal/compliance review;
  • executive decision-making about where the next media dollar should go.

Automation can reduce manual media buying without removing management.

How AppLovin Reporting Works

At the campaign level, AppLovin recommends focusing primarily on whether the campaign is meeting its:

  • ROAS target;
  • CPP target;
  • CPL goal where applicable.

Secondary metrics include:

  • CPM;
  • CTR;
  • clicks;
  • impressions;
  • spend;
  • new-customer data;
  • longer conversion windows.

AppLovin explicitly warns against using CPM or CTR as primary success metrics in isolation.

A high CPM can still occur on profitable days.

A high CTR can reflect attention without profitable conversion.

Asset-level reporting is different

AppLovin’s current Media Library reporting provides asset-level metrics such as:

  • impressions;
  • clicks;
  • CTR;
  • spend.

Revenue, ROAS, and CPP are reported at the creative-set level rather than directly for every individual asset.

That is another reason not to pause an asset simply because it does not appear to “win” on one isolated metric.

Attribution: There Is a Current AppLovin Documentation Conflict

This deserves explicit treatment because the current public documentation is inconsistent.

One current AppLovin resource page, Analyzing campaign performance, says:

  • attribution is click-based;
  • AppLovin does not currently attribute on a view-through basis.

However, the current AppLovin Support Center Measurement and attribution page says Ads Manager now includes two reporting modes:

  • Clicks
  • Clicks and views

The support article says the second mode can count transactions after a click or within one day of viewing an ad.

It also states that switching reporting mode changes reporting, not optimization, targeting, or billing.

Because both pages are live AppLovin sources, the safest operating approach is:

  1. verify which attribution setting is available and active in the advertiser’s current Ads Manager;
  2. document whether reports are using click-only or click-plus-view;
  3. keep the same attribution definition when comparing periods;
  4. reconcile AppLovin reporting with the third-party system and backend revenue;
  5. do not silently switch definitions while evaluating scale.

For D0 and D7 optimization, AppLovin’s current support documentation says:

  • D0 covers conversion activity within the first 24 hours;
  • D7 covers a longer 192-hour window;
  • D14 and D28 metrics can also appear in reporting for longer-term analysis.

Why Third-Party Measurement Matters

AppLovin currently integrates with multiple independent measurement platforms for web advertising.

The purpose is not to find a magical “true ROAS” number.

Different systems use different:

  • identity rules;
  • attribution windows;
  • event logic;
  • time zones;
  • first-click/last-click/multi-touch methods;
  • view-through treatment.

Some discrepancy is therefore normal.

The management job is to understand the reason for the discrepancy and use a consistent framework.

A strong measurement stack may compare:

  • AppLovin Ads Manager;
  • Shopify or backend sales;
  • Northbeam, Triple Whale, Measured, or another partner;
  • new-customer revenue;
  • blended MER;
  • geo holdouts or incrementality tests where practical.

How to Optimize Without Over-Managing the Algorithm

AppLovin’s own guidance consistently pushes advertisers away from excessive manual intervention.

A practical operating pattern is:

Let campaign targets do the media work

Do not try to micromanage every CPM fluctuation.

Judge the campaign against the business objective.

Add creative rather than constantly removing creative

AppLovin says more creative variety gives the model more opportunities to match messages to people.

Build from winners

When a concept works:

  • create new hooks;
  • change opening sequences;
  • adjust pacing;
  • test additional proof;
  • build new Interactive Pages;
  • extend the message into new catalog or offer variations.

Increase budget only after performance is consistent

AppLovin’s current web setup guide says to scale as long as you are happy with performance, so raise budgets in steps while your goal is being met.

AppLovin charges each day’s budget at 0:00 UTC (AppLovin billing), so we make larger budget changes at the start of the UTC day rather than mid-day.

Fresh creative should accompany larger scale increases because spend can raise reach and frequency.

A Practical First 30-Day AppLovin Operating Cadence

The following is a WKND operating framework, not an official AppLovin rule.

The purpose is to prevent two common failure modes:

  • making decisions before enough signal exists;
  • allowing the account to run for weeks without disciplined measurement.

Days 0 to 3: Technical validation

Primary objective: prove the measurement system works.

Check:

  • pixel or MMP firing;
  • purchase/lead events;
  • revenue and currency;
  • UTM structure;
  • third-party integration;
  • landing-page routing;
  • creative rendering;
  • campaign goal;
  • day target;
  • geography;
  • active attribution reporting definition.

Do not scale a campaign with broken signal.

Days 4 to 7: Observe learning and delivery

Primary objective: determine whether the campaign is spending and receiving enough conversion signal to evaluate.

Review:

  • daily spend;
  • purchase/lead volume;
  • ROAS/CPP/CPL versus target;
  • D0 and D7 trajectory where applicable;
  • new-customer mix;
  • tracking discrepancies;
  • creative-set spend distribution.

Avoid reacting to one bad CPM or one low-CTR asset.

Week 2: Diagnose the bottleneck

Classify the primary constraint:

  • not enough spend;
  • target too restrictive;
  • poor conversion rate;
  • weak creative;
  • low-quality leads;
  • measurement mismatch;
  • site friction;
  • offer/economics problem.

Make the fewest changes necessary to test the diagnosis.

Week 3: Expand what has evidence

If goals are being met:

  • add variations of winning creative;
  • test additional audience strategies where appropriate;
  • consider controlled budget increases;
  • add new landing-page or offer tests;
  • compare new-customer and backend economics.

If goals are not being met, do not scale because the dashboard is generating activity.

Week 4: Make a portfolio-level decision

By the end of the first month, the business should be able to answer:

  1. Is the campaign producing customers or leads at acceptable economics?
  2. Is reported performance consistent with backend or third-party measurement?
  3. Is AppLovin reaching incremental buyers?
  4. Is creative throughput sufficient for continued testing?
  5. Does the marginal return justify additional budget?
  6. What would have to improve for AppLovin to earn a larger role?

The decision can be:

  • scale;
  • hold and improve;
  • restructure;
  • stop.

The objective is not to “make AppLovin work.”

The objective is to determine whether AppLovin improves the total acquisition system.

Common AppLovin Launch Mistakes

Most launch failures come from weak inputs or premature decisions rather than from one isolated platform metric.

Launching before tracking is verified

Bad signals create bad learning.

Setting an unrealistic ROAS or CPP target

AppLovin warns that overly aggressive targets can restrict spend before enough data exists.

Copying social creative without adapting it

AppLovin is a full-screen mobile-game environment, not a feed.

Using only short video

Short creative may work, but AppLovin specifically recommends testing longer-form video to use the available attention.

Ignoring Interactive Pages

AppLovin describes every ad as a full-screen video followed by an interactive page and a dynamic catalog, and its ad specs call the Interactive Page the screen that “drives action with clear calls to action, product showcases, or branded visuals.” Treat it as its own asset, not an afterthought.

Pausing assets too quickly

Individual creatives can contribute at different parts of the customer journey.

Scaling from platform ROAS alone

A campaign can look attractive inside one attribution system and still fail an incrementality test.

Watching activity metrics instead of economics

CTR and CPM are diagnostic metrics.

The business outcome is what matters.

FAQs About How AppLovin Works

These answers consolidate the end-to-end advertiser questions assigned to this article in the SEMrush audit.

How does AppLovin work?

AppLovin Ads takes an advertiser’s conversion signals, campaign objective, budget, creative, and landing destination, then uses Axon AI to evaluate advertising opportunities across mobile apps and games. Web advertisers can optimize for ROAS, cost per purchase, or cost per lead. The system automates bidding and delivery while the advertiser manages tracking, economics, creative, measurement, and scaling decisions.

What is AppLovin and how does it work?

AppLovin is an advertising technology company. Its advertiser platform is AppLovin Ads, powered by Axon AI. Advertisers use the platform to acquire customers or app users. Publishers use MAX to monetize app inventory. AppLovin Ads evaluates available inventory, predicts value relative to the advertiser’s objective, and allocates spend toward predicted outcomes.

How do I advertise on AppLovin?

Create an AppLovin Ads account, connect conversion tracking, create a campaign, choose the optimization goal and audience strategy, select the day target and geography, set a budget, upload creative, and launch. For web advertisers, AppLovin currently supports Pixel setup through Shopify or Google Tag Manager and recommends validating events before spending.

How do I get started with AppLovin?

Start with business economics and measurement, not the ad interface. Define the allowable ROAS, CPP, CPL, or acquisition cost, verify the mobile funnel, install the Pixel or app measurement partner, confirm event accuracy, establish third-party measurement, then create the first campaign and creative sets.

How do I create an AppLovin account?

AppLovin Ads is open self-service. Since June 22, 2026, advertisers no longer need a referral code or an existing AppLovin relationship to sign up. Create an advertiser account through AppLovin, complete the required account information, then connect tracking before building and launching the first campaign.

How does AppLovin target customers?

Current web campaign setup emphasizes broad geography, conversion signals, audience strategy, creative, campaign goal, and historical purchase data rather than detailed manual interest stacks. Axon AI evaluates advertising opportunities and predicts which impressions are most likely to help reach the advertiser’s objective.

How does AppLovin measure conversions?

AppLovin uses Pixel or app measurement signals to connect ad engagement to conversion events. Current AppLovin documentation contains a reporting inconsistency: one resource describes click-only attribution, while the Support Center describes both Clicks and Clicks-and-views reporting. Advertisers should verify the active reporting mode in their current account and compare it consistently with third-party and backend data.

How long should I run an AppLovin test?

AppLovin does not publish a universal number of days that fits every advertiser. The right evaluation period depends on conversion volume, CPA, day target, consideration cycle, and data quality. A better rule is to run long enough to collect meaningful conversion signal, validate measurement, and make a decision based on business economics rather than an arbitrary calendar deadline.

Final Answer: AppLovin Automates Media Buying, Not Business Judgment

The cleanest operating model is:

You provide AppLovin with the goal, conversion data, budget, creative, and destination. Axon AI evaluates advertising opportunities and automates much of the bidding and delivery. You remain responsible for the quality of the inputs and whether the resulting customers create real business value.

That is why the highest-leverage work often happens outside the bidding algorithm:

  • accurate tracking;
  • realistic economics;
  • creative production;
  • landing-page quality;
  • attribution discipline;
  • incrementality;
  • controlled scaling.

AppLovin can automate the media engine.

It cannot replace the operating system around it.
