Yes. ChatGPT has ads.

OpenAI began testing ads in the United States on February 9, 2026 and has since expanded the consumer ads rollout to additional markets. OpenAI’s current help documentation says ads may appear for users on Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts remain ad-free.12

But there is an important distinction that many articles miss:

“Can a ChatGPT user see ads?” and “Can a business open Ads Manager?” are two different availability questions.

Yes, ChatGPT has ads now — clearly labelled, under the answer, and only on free tiers.

Tommy Patterson, WKND

OpenAI currently operates a phased consumer rollout while separately expanding advertiser access through Ads Manager Beta. A business may be based in a country where self-service Ads Manager is available even though consumer ad inventory, product features, personalization options, or delivery conditions are still evolving.34

This article separates those questions so you can understand what is actually live now.

The Current ChatGPT Ads Status at a Glance

As of September 7, 2026:

Question Current answer
Does ChatGPT have ads? Yes.
Are ChatGPT Ads live? Yes, as an active beta/test program.
Which account plans may see ads? Free and Go, where ads are available and the account is eligible.
Which plans are ad-free? Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu.
Do users under 18 see ads? No, based on OpenAI’s current age-identification systems.
Do Temporary Chats show ads? No.
Where do ads appear? Below ChatGPT responses, clearly separated and labeled as sponsored.
Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers? No. OpenAI says ads run separately from the response system.
Is Ads Manager available to advertisers? Yes. Self-service is currently available to legal entities based in 52 listed countries.
Is the platform finished/generalized? No. OpenAI still describes ChatGPT Ads and Ads Manager as beta products that will continue to evolve.

The status above is date-sensitive. OpenAI has changed availability multiple times during 2026, so businesses should verify the latest first-party documentation before making launch decisions.34

Who Sees Ads in ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s current user documentation says ads may appear for users on Free and Go plans.1

Ads are not shown to:

  • Plus accounts;
  • Pro accounts;
  • Business accounts;
  • Enterprise accounts;
  • Edu accounts;
  • accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.1

OpenAI also says Temporary Chats do not show ads.1

That means the answer to “Does ChatGPT have ads?” depends partly on the account and experience being used.

Two people can use ChatGPT on the same day and have different experiences:

  • one may see sponsored placements;
  • the other may be on an ad-free plan;
  • another may be outside the current rollout;
  • another may be using a Temporary Chat.

So “I don’t see ads in my account” is not evidence that ChatGPT Ads is not live.

Which ChatGPT Plans Have Ads?

The simplest current plan breakdown is:

Free

Ads may appear for eligible users in regions where the ads experience is available.1

OpenAI also currently offers eligible Free users an Ads-Free option with reduced usage limits and reduced feature access. That is different from merely turning off ad personalization.1

Go

Ads may appear for eligible Go users.1

OpenAI’s current documentation says the special Ads-Free Free-plan option is for the Free plan; Go users who want a fully ad-free paid experience would need to use an ad-free plan such as Plus or Pro.1

Plus

Ad-free.1

Pro

Ad-free.1

Business

Ad-free.1

Enterprise

Ad-free.1

Edu

Ad-free.1

Because product packaging can change, verify OpenAI’s current plan documentation rather than assuming today’s ad policy will remain unchanged permanently.

Where Do ChatGPT Ads Appear?

OpenAI says ads can appear below the end of a ChatGPT response.1

They are:

  • clearly labeled as sponsored;
  • visually separated from the organic answer;
  • selected through a separate advertising system;
  • not an indication that OpenAI endorses the advertiser.1

OpenAI’s current documentation also says users may see one or more ad units below a response when there is a relevant match. A unit may contain one or more items from one advertiser or, in some cases, multiple advertisers.1

That is worth noting because some early 2026 descriptions characterized the product as if there would always be only one sponsored card.

The current first-party documentation is broader.

Do Ads Affect What ChatGPT Says?

No.

OpenAI states that advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers and that advertisers cannot pay to shape, rank, or alter the response.15

This is a foundational distinction.

There are two separate surfaces:

Organic answer

Generated by ChatGPT independently of the advertising system.

Sponsored placement

A paid ad shown separately from the answer when the user, conversation, campaign, and ad are eligible.

Buying ChatGPT Ads should therefore not be marketed as a way to purchase an organic recommendation.

For a deeper explanation of the difference between sponsored placement and unpaid AI visibility, see our ChatGPT Ads vs Organic AI Visibility guide.

When Did ChatGPT Start Showing Ads?

OpenAI announced the initial U.S. ads test for February 9, 2026.1

OpenAI then documented additional rollout updates during the year. In an August 11, 2026 update, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads had launched in:

  • the United Kingdom;
  • Mexico;
  • Brazil;
  • Japan;
  • South Korea.5

Those markets were added to the previously launched U.S. test.

That does not mean those are the only markets that will ever receive ads.

OpenAI says the rollout is phased and will continue expanding as the company learns from the test.5

The detailed history belongs in our separate ChatGPT Ads rollout timeline article. This page is intentionally focused on what is live now, not every launch announcement.

Are ChatGPT Ads Still a Beta?

Yes.

OpenAI currently calls the advertiser platform Ads Manager Beta and describes ChatGPT Ads as being in the early stages of scaling.46

OpenAI says the beta continues to evolve across areas including:

  • delivery systems;
  • inventory;
  • ad formats;
  • buying;
  • campaign management;
  • measurement;
  • optimization.6

That matters for marketers because a tactical guide written two months ago can become partially obsolete even when its core idea is still correct.

For example, current OpenAI documentation now includes capabilities such as:

  • self-service advertiser onboarding in many countries;
  • CPC and CPM buying;
  • conversion-optimized campaigns;
  • custom audiences;
  • product-feed campaigns;
  • conversion measurement;
  • broader advertiser tooling.46

Treat ChatGPT Ads as a functioning advertising channel and an evolving beta at the same time.

Those statements are not contradictory.

Where Are ChatGPT Ads Live for Users?

This question needs careful wording because OpenAI publishes consumer rollout information separately from advertiser-account availability.

OpenAI’s public launch history confirms:

  • U.S. testing beginning February 9, 2026;
  • launch expansion to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea by August 11, 2026.5

OpenAI’s current user help page also says ads may appear for Free and Go users and notes that Ads controls are available in regions where ads are available or will soon be available.1

However, OpenAI does not present the current advertiser-country table as a definitive list of every market where every ChatGPT user can already receive every form of ad inventory.

Therefore:

Do not treat the Ads Manager self-service country list as a consumer ad-delivery map.

They answer different questions.

Where Is ChatGPT Ads Manager Available to Advertisers?

This is where the footprint is much broader.

As of September 7, 2026, OpenAI’s official Ads Manager Availability page lists self-service advertiser access in 52 countries.3

Those currently listed countries are:

  • Algeria
  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Bahrain
  • Belgium
  • Brazil
  • Bulgaria
  • Canada
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Egypt
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • India
  • Iraq
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Jordan
  • Korea
  • Kuwait
  • Latvia
  • Lebanon
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Mexico
  • Morocco
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Oman
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Qatar
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Tunisia
  • United Kingdom
  • United States3

The important eligibility rule is:

The legal entity that will advertise and be billed must be based in a country where self-service access is available.3

If a country is not listed, OpenAI says businesses can still create an account and be notified when access becomes available, but creating the account does not itself unlock self-service access.3

Larger advertisers can also contact OpenAI regarding sales support.3

Advertiser Availability Is Not the Same as Campaign Targeting

There are at least three geographic questions in ChatGPT advertising:

1. Where is the advertiser legally based?

This determines whether the company can use self-service Ads Manager.3

2. Which campaign locations can the advertiser target?

Ads Manager supports location targeting, with available options depending on the market and campaign setup.7

3. Where is consumer ad inventory currently live?

This depends on OpenAI’s phased consumer rollout and product eligibility.15

Those questions should not be merged into:

“ChatGPT Ads is available in X countries.”

That wording is too ambiguous.

A better question is:

Available for whom, to do what?

Can U.S. Businesses Advertise on ChatGPT Now?

Yes.

The United States is currently listed as available for self-service Ads Manager, and the original consumer advertising test began in the U.S.35

For a U.S.-based advertiser, access is no longer merely theoretical.

Businesses can use Ads Manager Beta to create and manage campaigns, subject to:

  • account setup and verification;
  • advertising policies;
  • billing;
  • campaign review;
  • campaign and ad eligibility.46

If you want the launch process rather than the status overview, see our How to Advertise on ChatGPT guide.

Can Businesses in Europe Advertise on ChatGPT?

Many can now access Ads Manager self-service.

OpenAI’s September 7, 2026 availability list includes numerous European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, and others.3

But there is a separate privacy/personalization consideration.

OpenAI’s current user documentation says personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.1

That is another example of why advertiser access and the exact end-user advertising experience should not be treated as identical.

Who Does Not See ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI currently identifies several groups or contexts where ads do not appear.

Users on ad-free paid/business plans

Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu.1

Accounts identified as belonging to people under 18

OpenAI says it uses account-level age information and age prediction where available.1

Temporary Chats

OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not show ads.1

Sensitive conversational contexts

OpenAI says ads are not placed near sensitive user content such as personal health conversations and does not currently allow political advertising in ChatGPT.1

Some regions or experiences

Availability remains phased and region-dependent.15

OpenAI also currently says ads do not appear in the ChatGPT Atlas browser during the test.1

Can You Turn Off ChatGPT Ads?

Sometimes.

There are two different controls:

Turn off ad personalization

Eligible users can disable personalization.

This changes the signals used to select ads, but it does not necessarily remove ads. OpenAI says the current chat thread can still be used to determine relevance even when broader personalization is disabled.1

Use an ad-free experience

Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu are ad-free.1

OpenAI also currently offers eligible Free-plan users an Ads-Free option with lower message limits and reduced access to some features.1

Do not confuse “not personalized” with “no ads.”

They are different settings.

What Information Do Advertisers Get?

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive:

  • ChatGPT conversations;
  • chat history;
  • memories;
  • names;
  • email addresses;
  • precise locations;
  • IP addresses;
  • sensitive personal information.1

Advertisers receive aggregated performance information such as views and clicks, with Ads Manager supporting additional campaign measurement and reporting workflows.14

This matters because contextual advertising does not mean:

“The advertiser gets to read what the user told ChatGPT.”

OpenAI says the contextual signals stay within ChatGPT for ad relevance and are not handed to the advertiser.1

Why Does ChatGPT Have Ads?

OpenAI says advertising is intended to support broader access to ChatGPT and continued investment in the product while preserving answer independence, conversation privacy, and user choice.15

Whatever a user’s opinion of that business model, the operational reality is now clear:

ChatGPT advertising is no longer just an announced concept.

There is a functioning consumer ad experience, a live Ads Manager Beta, self-service advertiser access in dozens of countries, current campaign tooling, and an expanding set of advertising capabilities.346

What Should Advertisers Do Now?

If your business is considering ChatGPT Ads, the current decision should not be:

“Are ads actually coming?”

They are already here.

The useful questions are now:

  1. Is our legal entity eligible for Ads Manager?
  2. Can we target the market we care about?
  3. Does our audience meaningfully use ChatGPT during research or decision-making?
  4. Do we have an offer that makes sense in conversational context?
  5. Is conversion measurement ready?
  6. Can we create enough distinct campaign and creative hypotheses to learn something useful?
  7. Does the economics of a test make sense relative to other acquisition channels?

If the answer is yes, the next step is learning how the system works and structuring a controlled test.

If you want WKND to operate the channel instead of building the system internally, see our ChatGPT Ads management service.
