A brand does not need to buy ChatGPT Ads to be mentioned organically in ChatGPT, and buying ChatGPT Ads does not make ChatGPT more likely to recommend that advertiser inside its organic answer.
OpenAI is explicit about that boundary: ads are separate from ChatGPT’s answers, and advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.12
That means there are at least three different outcomes marketers need to separate:
Paid gets you into the conversation today. Organic visibility decides whether you belong there tomorrow.
- Paid placement – your sponsored ad appears alongside a relevant ChatGPT conversation.
- Organic brand mention – ChatGPT or another AI assistant names your brand inside its answer.
- Organic citation – the answer cites or links to a page from your website or another source discussing your brand.
A fourth outcome matters too:
- Search-source eligibility – your website is technically available to be crawled, indexed, and considered when an AI search experience retrieves current information.
Those outcomes can happen on the same screen, but they are not the same system and should not be measured as if they are.
This guide explains what brands can actually control, what the platforms publicly document, and where marketers should be careful not to turn reasonable AI-visibility strategy into unsupported ranking claims.
The Short Answer: How Do Brands Get Mentioned in ChatGPT or Perplexity Without Ads?
There is no public form where you can submit a brand and force ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend it.
There is also no documented organic “bid” that buys a brand mention.
For ChatGPT Search, OpenAI says public websites can be eligible to appear when OAI-SearchBot can crawl them, and that search results are ranked using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant and reliable information. OpenAI also says placement is not guaranteed.34
For Perplexity, its crawler documentation says PerplexityBot is specifically designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results. Perplexity also documents a source-review system that evaluates some domains using site-level editorial signals such as whether the site corrects errors, identifies authors, and separates information from advertising and opinion.56
Neither company publishes a complete formula that says:
“Do these seven things and your brand will be mentioned.”
So the defensible strategy is not to chase a mythical AI-ranking checklist.
It is to make your brand:
- technically accessible to the relevant search crawlers;
- unambiguous about what it is and who it serves;
- useful on the exact questions buyers ask;
- supported by verifiable evidence;
- represented consistently across credible public sources;
- measurable across a repeatable set of buyer prompts.
Those are controllable inputs. The final AI answer is not.
Paid Placement, Brand Mentions, and Citations Are Different
The fastest way to create a bad AI marketing strategy is to collapse everything into one metric called “AI visibility.”
Here is the useful distinction:
| Visibility type | What happened | Can you buy it directly? | Primary measurement |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT ad | Sponsored placement appears | Yes | Ads Manager impressions, clicks, conversions |
| Organic brand mention | AI names the brand in its answer | No documented direct purchase path | Mention rate across tracked prompts |
| Organic citation | AI links to a source page | No documented direct purchase path | Citation rate and cited URLs |
| Search-source eligibility | Site can be crawled/retrieved for search | No | Crawler access, indexability, surfaced citations |
OpenAI’s ads policy is particularly clear: sponsored placements remain separate from answers and do not influence them.12
So if a company buys ChatGPT Ads on Monday and appears in an organic answer on Friday, the ad campaign by itself is not evidence that the paid media caused the organic mention.
Treat the two systems independently unless you have a study design that can support a causal claim.
What Does an Organic Brand Mention Actually Mean?
An organic brand mention means the assistant names the brand as part of its answer without that name appearing as the sponsored placement.
For example, a user might ask:
What are some good ecommerce agencies for a Shopify brand?
If an assistant includes a company in the response itself, that is a brand mention.
A mention does not necessarily mean the company’s own website was cited.
The answer may name a brand while citing:
- the brand’s website;
- a review page;
- a directory;
- a comparison article;
- a news story;
- another source entirely.
That is why mentions and citations should be tracked separately.
A brand can have:
- mentions with no citation;
- citations with no strong recommendation;
- both;
- neither.
The difference matters because each one tells you something different about the brand’s visibility.
What Is an Organic Citation?
A citation is a source link attached to an answer.
When ChatGPT uses web search, responses can include inline citations and a Sources panel containing linked sources. OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT Search and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot if a publisher wants its content to be discoverable, surfaced, and clearly cited and linked.34
Perplexity is also fundamentally source-oriented. Its crawler documentation says PerplexityBot gathers and indexes information from the web so websites can be surfaced and linked in Perplexity search results.5
A citation therefore tells you:
This page or domain was used or surfaced as a source in this answer.
It does not automatically tell you:
This is the brand the AI recommends most.
Those are different outcomes.
Can Buying ChatGPT Ads Improve Organic ChatGPT Mentions?
OpenAI says advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers.12
So the correct operating assumption is:
Do not buy ChatGPT Ads as an organic-ranking tactic.
Buy ChatGPT Ads because paid placement itself is valuable to the business.
Invest in organic AI visibility because being mentioned or cited inside unpaid answers is valuable.
The two channels can support the same business objective, but the paid campaign should not be represented as a shortcut into the organic response.
This separation is important for measurement too.
A paid-media team should measure:
- ad impressions;
- clicks;
- spend;
- conversions;
- pipeline or revenue.
An organic AI-visibility program should measure:
- prompt coverage;
- brand mention rate;
- citation rate;
- cited pages;
- competitive share of mentions;
- how the brand is described;
- attributable organic traffic where measurable.
Combining all of that into a single “AI visibility score” can hide whether anything actually improved.
How Can a Website Become Eligible for ChatGPT Search?
For current web information, technical accessibility is the first controllable requirement.
OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search. To help content be discovered, surfaced, cited, and linked, website owners should ensure they are not blocking OAI-SearchBot.3
OpenAI’s current guidance also makes two important points:
- ChatGPT Search uses multiple factors intended to surface relevant and reliable information.
- There is no guaranteed top placement.4
That distinction should shape your expectations.
Allowing the crawler is an eligibility step, not a ranking guarantee.
Practical ChatGPT Search technical checks
Verify that:
robots.txtdoes not unintentionally block OAI-SearchBot;- important pages are publicly accessible;
- the host or CDN allows traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP ranges;
- important content is not hidden behind authentication;
- canonical and indexing directives are intentional;
- the page clearly identifies the subject it is about.
The first four are directly connected to crawl/search accessibility. The final point is an editorial best practice, not a documented OpenAI ranking factor.
How Can a Website Become Eligible for Perplexity Search?
Perplexity publishes a similar technical requirement.
Its documentation says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results and recommends allowing the crawler and its published IP ranges if a site wants to appear in results.5
Perplexity also says it respects robots.txt. If a website blocks PerplexityBot, the crawler will not index the site’s full or partial text content, although Perplexity says it may still index limited information such as the domain, headline, and a brief factual summary.7
Again:
Crawl access creates eligibility. It does not guarantee recommendation.
What Does Perplexity Say About Source Quality?
Perplexity now labels some cited domains as Government, Academic, or Trusted.
Its published source-review process evaluates the website as a whole, not each individual article, using questions such as:
- Does the site correct mistakes?
- Does it identify who wrote each piece?
- Does it separate news or informational material from advertising and opinion?6
Perplexity explicitly says those labels are not endorsements of every claim on the site and that business arrangements do not determine the label.6
This is useful because it gives publishers a rare first-party view into the kinds of site-level editorial practices Perplexity considers when reviewing sources.
It is not proof that adding an author byline will cause a page to rank.
The correct conclusion is narrower:
Transparent editorial practices can matter to how an answer engine evaluates the source environment, but Perplexity does not publish a simple source-label-to-ranking formula.
For Ecommerce Brands, Product Data Can Matter Too
Perplexity is unusually explicit about one organic recommendation surface: product discovery.
Its current product documentation says organic product listings are determined algorithmically rather than purchased, and that richer product information-such as availability, reviews, pricing, and specifications-can improve the likelihood that relevant products are recommended.8
That is a useful reminder that “AI visibility” is not only about blog content.
For ecommerce brands, structured and current commercial data can be part of the source material an answer engine uses to understand whether a product is relevant to a shopper.
Do not generalize that specific Perplexity product rule into a universal ChatGPT ranking factor.
Use it only where the documented product experience applies.
So What Can a Brand Actually Do to Improve Organic AI Visibility?
There is no guaranteed formula.
But there is a practical operating model that keeps the strategy tied to things a company can control.
1. Make the site accessible to the engines you want visibility in
For ChatGPT Search, verify OAI-SearchBot access.34
For Perplexity, verify PerplexityBot access.57
Do this before spending weeks publishing content that the relevant crawler cannot properly access.
2. Make the brand’s category and offer unambiguous
A company’s core pages should make it easy for both people and machines to answer:
- What is this company?
- What category is it in?
- What does it sell?
- Who is it for?
- Where does it operate?
- What makes it different?
- What proof supports those claims?
This is an editorial and entity-clarity recommendation.
Neither OpenAI nor Perplexity publishes a rule saying a particular sentence structure guarantees an AI mention.
The purpose is to reduce ambiguity, not to “hack” the model.
3. Publish pages that directly answer real buyer questions
If prospective customers ask:
- Which platform is best for this problem?
- What does this service cost?
- How does this product compare with an alternative?
- Is this solution appropriate for my business?
- What are the risks?
- How does implementation work?
then build resources that answer those questions accurately and completely.
That gives search-oriented AI systems useful pages to retrieve when those questions arise.
The goal is not maximum article count.
It is useful coverage of the questions that actually define the buying journey.
4. Make important claims verifiable
If your website says:
Our platform is the fastest solution in the category.
ask:
According to what evidence?
Strong pages should distinguish:
- facts;
- first-party data;
- customer evidence;
- opinion;
- methodology;
- product specifications.
Perplexity’s source-review documentation explicitly values editorial transparency at the site level.6
Even when a platform has not published a direct ranking rule around a specific trust signal, transparent sourcing makes the content more useful to both the user and anyone evaluating the claim.
5. Build a credible public footprint beyond your own website
This is where marketers should be precise.
OpenAI and Perplexity do not publish a rule that says “X third-party mentions = Y increase in recommendations.”
However, current answer engines retrieve information from across the public web, not only from a company’s own homepage.35
A defensible brand strategy therefore includes earning accurate representation in independent places that matter to the category, such as:
- reputable editorial coverage;
- relevant industry publications;
- credible reviews;
- legitimate directories;
- comparison resources;
- expert commentary;
- customer communities where participation is appropriate.
This should be treated as corroboration and discoverability strategy, not as a guaranteed ranking recipe.
6. Keep important commercial facts current
For a software company that may mean:
- product capabilities;
- pricing;
- integrations;
- plan names;
- supported regions.
For ecommerce:
- availability;
- pricing;
- reviews;
- specifications;
- product identifiers.
For a service company:
- service definition;
- locations served;
- expertise;
- proof;
- current team and contact information.
An answer engine cannot accurately represent information that the public web presents inconsistently.
7. Measure the prompts that matter
Do not judge organic AI visibility from one random prompt.
Create a repeatable question set around:
- category discovery;
- comparisons;
- problem/solution searches;
- “best” or “top” questions;
- implementation;
- pricing;
- objections;
- local or vertical intent where appropriate.
For each platform and prompt, track separately:
- brand mentioned? yes/no;
- position/order if the answer presents an ordered set;
- brand cited? yes/no;
- which URL was cited;
- competitor mentions;
- wording or sentiment;
- whether web search was used where observable.
The purpose is not to pretend AI answers are perfectly deterministic.
The purpose is to measure a consistent sample instead of relying on anecdotes.
What Is the Difference Between GEO, AEO, LLMO, and ChatGPT Ads?
The terminology around organic AI visibility is messy.
WKND uses LLMO as the commercial service category for improving brand presence across large-language-model and answer-engine experiences.
Whatever label you prefer-LLMO, GEO, AEO, AI visibility-the organic work is fundamentally different from buying ChatGPT Ads.
Organic AI visibility work may include
- crawl and index accessibility;
- entity clarity;
- content architecture;
- answer-oriented content;
- authoritative sourcing;
- off-site corroboration;
- monitoring mentions and citations.
ChatGPT Ads work may include
- advertiser account setup;
- campaign architecture;
- context hints;
- ad creative;
- bidding;
- audience and geographic controls;
- Pixel / Conversions API implementation;
- paid measurement and optimization.
If your goal is to improve unpaid brand visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and related systems, see WKND’s LLMO service.
If your goal is to buy paid placement inside ChatGPT conversations, see WKND’s ChatGPT Ads management service.
They solve different problems.
When Should You Use ChatGPT Ads Instead of Waiting for Organic Visibility?
Organic visibility can be valuable, but it is not directly purchasable or guaranteed.
Paid advertising provides a different type of control: the ability to participate in eligible paid inventory with a defined campaign, budget, creative, targeting, and measurement system.
ChatGPT Ads may make more sense when:
- you want paid visibility now;
- the category is strategically important but your brand has little organic presence;
- you need measurable campaign delivery;
- you already have a working offer and conversion path;
- you want to test demand before committing to a longer organic program.
If you are evaluating the paid route, our How to Advertise on ChatGPT guide explains the current setup process.
Paid visibility can complement an organic program.
It should not be presented as a way to purchase organic recommendations.
When Should You Focus on Organic AI Visibility?
Organic work is more relevant when the business wants to increase the chance of being:
- named in category answers;
- cited as a source;
- included in research and comparison conversations;
- represented accurately when users ask about the company;
- visible across multiple answer engines instead of one paid platform.
The tradeoff is control.
With ads, you can control campaign inputs such as budget and creative.
With organic AI visibility, you can improve the public inputs but cannot dictate the output.
That means the organic program should be measured as a portfolio of visibility signals over time rather than promised as a guaranteed ranking position.
Should a Brand Do Both?
Often, yes-but not because one secretly improves the other.
Use them as separate acquisition and visibility systems.
A simple model is:
| Business need | Paid ChatGPT Ads | Organic AI visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate paid placement | Strong fit | Weak fit |
| Control over campaign spend | Strong fit | No direct control |
| Organic brand mentions | Not a ranking lever | Primary objective |
| Organic citations | Not a ranking lever | Primary objective |
| Cross-engine visibility | ChatGPT-specific paid inventory | Can span multiple AI systems |
| Direct paid conversion reporting | Strong fit | Limited/indirect |
| Long-term source footprint | Limited to active campaign | Stronger strategic role |
The channels can support the same customer journey without being the same channel.
A brand might use organic content to become a trusted source for research-oriented questions and use paid ChatGPT Ads to create sponsored visibility around high-value commercial conversations.
The important thing is to measure each layer honestly.
What Not to Do
Do not buy ChatGPT Ads hoping to manipulate organic answers
OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.12
Do not block the search crawlers and then wonder why current content is hard to surface
Check OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot access if visibility in those search experiences matters.35
Do not publish dozens of near-duplicate “AI optimized” pages without user value
More pages do not automatically create more visibility.
Build pages because they answer distinct questions or intents.
Do not claim guaranteed ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions
Neither platform publishes a mechanism that gives a marketer guaranteed organic placement.
Do not confuse a citation with a recommendation
A source can be cited without being the recommended brand.
Do not confuse a paid impression with an organic mention
They are different systems and should be reported separately.
A Practical 30-Day AI Visibility Baseline
If you are starting from zero, the first month should be about establishing a measurable baseline rather than promising instant recommendations.
Week 1: Technical eligibility
- Verify OAI-SearchBot access.
- Verify PerplexityBot access.
- Check important robots and indexing directives.
- Identify the pages that should represent the brand, categories, services, and products.
Week 2: Prompt and competitor baseline
Build a defined prompt set for:
- category;
- comparison;
- problem/solution;
- buyer objections;
- pricing;
- service/product use cases.
Record whether the brand and competitors are mentioned and cited.
Week 3: Source and content gap analysis
For prompts where competitors appear and the brand does not:
- inspect cited sources;
- inspect the competitors’ relevant pages;
- determine whether WKND/the brand has a content gap, evidence gap, entity-clarity gap, or off-site representation gap.
Do not assume every loss is caused by missing content.
Week 4: Prioritize only evidenced gaps
Create or improve assets where the research shows a real deficiency.
Examples might include:
- missing comparison content;
- outdated product documentation;
- poor crawl accessibility;
- unclear service/entity pages;
- absent evidence;
- inconsistent public information.
Then continue measuring the same prompt set.
This creates a feedback loop instead of a superstition loop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you pay to get your brand mentioned organically in ChatGPT?
Not through ChatGPT Ads. OpenAI says advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s organic answers.12
Does advertising on ChatGPT improve organic AI visibility?
OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT answers, so an ad campaign should not be treated as an organic-visibility tactic.12
How can my website appear in ChatGPT Search?
OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT Search and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot so content can be discovered, surfaced, cited, and linked. Placement is not guaranteed.34
How can my website appear in Perplexity?
Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in its search results and recommends allowing the crawler and its published IP ranges.5
Are Perplexity product recommendations sponsored?
Perplexity says its organic product listings are algorithmically determined based on relevance and ratings, and that advertisers cannot pay to be listed in the related-products section.8
Is a ChatGPT mention the same as a citation?
No. A mention means the answer names the brand. A citation means the answer links to a source. An answer can contain one without the other.
Can an agency guarantee ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions?
No agency can credibly guarantee a specific organic mention unless the platform itself provides such a mechanism. OpenAI explicitly says ChatGPT Search placement is not guaranteed.4
Should I use ChatGPT Ads or LLMO?
Use ChatGPT Ads when the objective is paid placement with campaign-level control and measurement. Use LLMO/organic AI visibility work when the objective is to improve unpaid mentions, citations, source coverage, and brand representation across AI systems. Many companies may eventually use both, but the channels should be measured independently.
